Do you love travelling but despise packing before every trip? Do you spend more than 2 hours packing for your holiday? Do you often get the feeling that you forgot to pack something when leaving home? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this guide is perfect for you. It will teach you the tricks to pack quickly and efficiently for your next trip. I promise you will never have to feel like you forgot something at home if you follow this guide and my packing list which is available for download at the end of the post.
You won’t believe it, I used to absolutely dislike packing before. I would start packing two weeks before my trips to ensure I don’t forget to pack something important. However, due to my numerous expeditions, I have learnt how to pack effectively in a short period of time. Now, I just pack a night before my trip and never forget to bring any crucial items with me. Packing can seem like an extremely daunting task to some, but don’t worry because this step-by-step guide will help you get over that fear of packing and save your valuable time.
Step 1: Place all your luggage in one place
Firstly, bring out a suitcase and the kits you are planning to take on the trip. I would recommend taking out at least 1 suitcase of your preferred size, 1 backpack, 1 toiletry bag, 1 shoe kit, and a handbag or clutch.
I carry my main toiletry bag in the suitcase and an extra one in my backpack. It is more convenient to carry a toothbrush and a face wash in a pouch to avoid any leakages.
At this stage, don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of things you have to pack, just take a deep breath and continue to the next step of the guide.
Step 2- Pack your clothes in the suitcase
Secondly, take out all the clothes you want to take for your holiday and arrange it neatly in the suitcase. You should spend around 15 minutes at this stage.
Do remember to pack your accessories like scarfs, headbands, bandanas, chokers, Polaroids etc. I advise you to always pack a jacket, as the weather can be unpredictable.
I personally only carry a limited amount of clothes with me to minimize confusion during the trip. Pick clothes that you have already tried and tested before. If you are having trouble choosing your clothes, remember the mantra, “Quality over Quantity”.
Step 3- Keep your personal care items
Thirdly, bring out all your personal care essentials and place them in a toiletry bag. Some basic items that you could always keep in the bag are make-up, moisturizer, comb, sun-screen, and perfume.
When choosing a toiletry bag, its very important to pick the right material. The bag should be able to withstand any accidental leaks.
As you can see in the picture, I always carry a miniature perfume with me. They are extremely handy and always let you smell fresh.
Step 4- Place all your footwear in a bag
Fourthly, collect the footwear you are taking with you on the trip and place them in a shoe kit. Just like clothes, I only carry a limited number of shoes with me.
If you decide to take your boots with you, you should wear them during the journey so they don’t take up a lot of space in your suitcase.
Congratulations on reaching this part of the guide, you are almost done packing for your great adventure.
Step 5- Pack all essentials in a backpack
Lastly, gather all your important documents and place them in a backpack or a handbag. You should be extremely careful during this section as it is crucial to the trip.
Keep flight tickets, hotel booking confirmations, credit/debit cards, wallet, passport and laptop. Don’t forget to pack some in-flight entertainment as well.
